The 2012 Celebration of Excellence saw Canadian Olympians reach millions of students, fans, corporate partners, government leaders over a three-day period of public outreach in Ottawa and Toronto. One of the highlights for me was meeting fans and students from Toronto on Friday September 21st at the Olympic Heroes Parade. This was our opportunity to thank our communities for their support through public appearances in schools, hospitals, and public celebrations.

Having taken the helm of Gymnastics Australia almost a month ago, CEO Mark Rendell provides an insight into his experiences to date and his plans for 2013 and beyond.

"I firmly believe that sport needs to be seen as customer service organisations first and foremost. Therefore in my first month at Gymnastics Australia I have been seeking to understand the key projects and programs currently being implemented and identifying critical unmet customer needs.

As you would be aware, Gymnastics Australia’s current strategic period is at an end, and the new four year strategic plan is set to be launched in the New Year. This plan will provide an exciting new direction for Gymnastics Australia and I look forward to working with all key stakeholders in the implementation of the plan.",

Eleição dos Órgãos Sociais da AGA para o quadriénio 2013/2016

Realizou-se no dia 19 de dezembro, no pavilhão municipal de Lagos, a Assembleia Geral Eleitoral para a eleição dos Órgãos Sociais da AGA para o quadriénio 2013/2016.

Como não foi apresentada nenhuma candidatura no prazo estabelecido no Artigo 4.º do Regimento Eleitoral e considerando que não é admissível o adiamento de todo um processo eleitoral quando foi aprovado e já está em execução o Plano de Atividades e Orçamento para a presente época desportiva 2012/2013, numa tentativa de evitar o que se passou no ciclo olímpico anterior (entre final de 2008 e início de 2010 foram agendadas várias Assembleias Gerais Eleitorais), alguns elementos dos Órgãos Sociais cessantes apresentaram candidatura nos termos do disposto no Artigo 10.º do Regimento Eleitoral.

Submetida a sufrágio, a única lista candidata obteve 26 votos, não se registando nenhuns votos em branco ou nulos, pelo que foi eleita por unanimidade.

Even as a child, Karen Cockburn dreamed of going to the Olympics. Her parents, Colin and Patricia, have memories of Karen running around the house doing cartwheels and vaulting over couches.

Karen was first introduced to the trampoline as a training tool for gymnastics and diving. The adrenaline rush from learning new tricks and soaring through the air hooked Karen to the sport. After two years, she began competing in trampoline for Canada at the international level.

2013 Trampoline Gymnastics season

The 2013 international season in Trampoline Gymnastics consists of two FIG World Cup competitions, the 9th World Games, the 22nd FIG World Age Group Competitions and the 29th FIG World Championships.

Both World Cup events, taking place on September 6-7 in Loulé (POR) and on October 4-5 in Odense (DEN) are category A tournamentsand will feature Men’s and Women’s Individual and Synchronised Trampoline as well as Tumbling.

Since the minimum number of three World Cups per year is not reached in 2013, no circuit and no World Ranking will be established.

Trampoline Gymnastics competitions featuring Synchronised Trampoline, Tumbling and Double Mini-trampoline will be included in the programme for the 9th World Games in Cali (COL) scheduled for July 28-31.

The highlight of the 2013 Trampoline Gymnastics season will be the 29nd FIG World Championships in Sofia (BUL) on November 7-10 followed by the 22nd World Age Group Competitions on November 14-17.

Information on the events including registration deadlines, contact details, invitations and directives, as well as links to the event website and to related news articles can be found in the FIG online calendar.

Estágio de Natal FGP

Começou hoje o estágio da FGP que reúne 150 participantes - atletas, treinadores, fisioterapeutas, nutricionista e psicológo, no Centro de Alto Rendimento de Anadia, até dia 23 de Dezembro.

Pela primeira vez estão em estágio as 7 disciplinas de competição, com os ginastas olímpicos, de seleção nacional e alto rendimento em preparação para os campeonatos da europa e do mundo de 2013.

Luís Duarte foi distinguido com o prémio Stromp 2012 na categoria de Seccionista/Coordenador do ano.

A entrega dos prémios Stromp decorrerá na próxima quinta-feira, 20 de Dezembro, às 20h00, no Hotel Sheraton, em Lisboa. Luís Duarte foi distinguido com o prémio Stromp 2012 na categoria de Seccionista/Coordenador do ano. O ex-atleta está há vários anos no Sporting e tem feito a modalidade de ginástica crescer no Clube.

“É um orgulho muito grande receber esta distinção. Vem depois de vários anos de dedicação ao Clube, enquanto atleta e agora como seccionista/coordenador da ginástica do Sporting. Este prémio enche-me de orgulho, claro, mas é o reconhecimento, não só do meu trabalho, como de todos aqueles que, ao longo dos anos trabalham comigo e vivem esta modalidade e este Clube intensamente. Fico muito agradecido”, disse o premiado.

'É o reconhecimento do trabalho de todos', foram as palavras de Luis Duarte.

Pretoria hosts African Championships

A feast of Gymnastics entertainment will be on display in Pretoria (RSA) during the month of December when top gymnasts from across the African continent contest for Africa Championship titles in the various Gymnastics disciplines of Aerobic Gymnastics; Rhythmic Gymnastics; Trampoline; Double Mini-trampoline and Tumbling.

The South African Gymnastics Federation (SAGF) takes great pleasure in hosting the 11th African Gymnastics Championships at Tukssport Indoor Sports Centre Pretoria, from December 9 – 13, 2012. Countries participating will be those from Algeria; Angola; Congo; Egypt; Mozambique; Namibia; South Africa; Senegal; Tunisia; and Zimbabwe, with just under 160 participants in total to date.

Entertaining performances by high caliber junior and senior elite level gymnasts from across Africa will be on display. With the Africa Championships occurring every 2nd year in rotating countries, this is a unique opportunity for South African Gymnastics fans to watch Africa’s best gymnasts live, as well as offer support to local gymnasts taking part.

International Gymnastics dignitaries will also be in attendance, such as International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) President Prof. Bruno Grandi (ITA); FIG Vice President Dr. Michel Léglise (FIG); FIG Deputy Secretary General Nicolas Buompane; African Gymnastics Union (UAG) President Mohamed Yamani (ALG) and UAG Secretary General Ali Zaater.

SAGF welcomes all spectators and gymnastic enthusiasts to come and watch this Gymnastics spectacle. Entry is free for all spectator.

The UEG representatives are known!

The 79^th FIG Congress came to a close in Cancun (MEX) with the traditional gala dinner attended by the 106 present national federations.

Previously, on the occasion of the 10^th anniversary of the academies, the FIG President Prof. Bruno Grandi (ITA) awarded the UEG and its President Georges Guelzec a distinction as a thank you for having provided the highest number of experts of all unions.

The day before, the delegates have elected the new authority members for the cycle 2013 -2016.

The UEG keeps the presidency of 6 technical committees out of 7 but its representation in the Executive Committee decreases. “I regret this weak participation of our European representatives for a union which counts with 48 federations nearly a third of the 134 affiliated to the FIG!” declared the President Guelzec and added: “I will raise the awareness of our member federations and invite them to participate more actively in the life of the FIG:”

President Guelzec warmly congratulated the elected UEG delegates. The European Union of Gymnastics had presented 64 candidates of which 44 have been elected.

The new authorities will come together in February 2013 in Lausanne for the first official act of their new mandate.

UEG Events Sanctions

The UEG wants to inform its Member Federations that due to negative experiences at former events the UEG Executive Committee has made the following decision at its last meeting held in Lausanne, on January 27th and 28th, 2012, in case a mobile phone or any other electronic communication device should be used during the European Championships: If a mobile phone or any other electronic communication device should be used on the field of play during the entire competitions of the European Championships, the person concerned (gymnast, coach, etc.) will be immediately expelled. The gymnasts will not be ranked and will not be authorised to participate in the remaining competitions. If this rule is violated by a coach, all his gymnast will also be expelled ! Please note that this decision will be applied for the first time at the European Championships Trampoline, Tumbling and Double Mini-Tramp 2012 in St. Petersburg.

Asian Gymnastics Union convenes

The Executive Committee in full of the Asian Gymnastics Union (AGU) was convened by its President A-Rahman Al-Shatri of Qatar, February 3 – 4 in Incheon (KOR). Incheon was chosen for the meeting as it will host the Asian Games from September 19 – October 4, 2014.

A new Secretary General, Mr Mohamed Saeed (QAT), was elected following the resignation of Mr Mohamed Al-Naimi, who stepped down for professional reasons. Financial reports, 2011 accounts and the 2012 budged were also approved.
Among topics on the order of the day were AGU development projects. President Al-Shatri invited members to give precedence to federations not having held courses last year, those hosting the Union Championships, and to those in a position to provide the best possible conditions.
It was with particular interest that the Executive Committee followed a report given by General Director Mr Jacques Janssen of Janssen + Fritsen, with whom the AGU has recently signed a sponsoring agreement for the manufacturing of gymnastics apparatus. A partnership package was equally presented to members of German manufacturer Eurotramp.

Members conferred extensively with the AGU Commission over the 5th Asian Championships in Artistic Gymnastics, scheduled to be held November 10 – 15, 2012 in Putian (CHN). The Executive Committee held the draw for the Junior Asian Championships in Artistic and Trampoline Gymnastics, slated for March 11 – 14, 2102 in Thailand.Notícia FIG na íntegra, aqui.

Cirque du Soleil’s Asian Retreat: First ZED, Now Zaia

The Cirque du Soleil’s Asian invasion has just suffered another setback. Not long after pulling its ZED , directed by François Girard, out of Tokyo, the multinational entertainment company is about to shut down its Zaia, directed by Gilles Maheu, out of Macau, after three and half years, interrupting a 10-year contract.

Three and half years is a long run for any show. But with Cirque, a decade is the norm. In Japan, an eartquake and tsunami damaged the ZED box office take at Tokyo Disney. Why Macau? Apparently, unlike Las Vegas, where fine dining and entertainment are popular diversions, the people who visit casinos in Macau actually prefer gambling. And there is a bit of a world economic crisis.

Support a Young Gymnast

Part of being a parent necessarily involves being interested and concerned in all aspects of a child’s life. But how much interest and how much concern should a mom or dad show for their young one? It can be difficult sometimes, and go against the grain of parental instincts, but parents need to allow their children a modicum of independence for them to thrive, find their true selves, develop sufficiency and lead lives of their own outside the home.

A dilemma arises when parents become overly involved in their children’s lives, and particularly in the sports that they play. When this happens, the child will start to feel like a puppet, with his or her parents playing the puppeteer. Youngsters in this situation lose the interest and drive that initially motivated them to participate in a sport. Having lost all sense of control that they have over any decision involving their athletic lives, they will find less pleasure and more discontent, eventually causing them to abandon their sport.

This type of conduct in some parents and coaches has proved to have a negative effect on the youngster’s athletic life. Imagine the humiliation and loss of morale a young athlete experiences every time his or her parents and coaches bellow stridently at judges, or even at the athlete for a poorly executed move at practice or competition.

From Analysis to Coaching - The Need for Objective Feedback

The coaching process is about enhancing performance by providing feedback about the performance to the athlete or team. Researchers have shown that human observation and memory, wonderful though they are, are not reliable enough to provide accurate and objective information for high-performance athletes. Objective measuring tools are necessary to enable the feedback process. These can take the form of video analysis systems post-event, both biomechanical or computerised notation systems, or the use of in-event systems.

Hand and computerised notation systems provide the same sort of data, both intrinsically being the same process, and they are used for the same purposes: analysis of movement, tactical evaluation, technical evaluation and statistical compilation. The recent developments in both computer and video technologies have transformed the approach of performance analysts and, consequently, their use in the coaching process. To ensure that accurate and reliable data are gathered for analysis for the coach, considerable training of the operatives is necessary, making the application of any of these systems more and more a specialism.

Trampoline Academy turns to Morocco

The fourth FIG Academy for 2012 was a Level 1 Trampoline Academy in Marrakech, Morocco. It began towards the end of the Level 3 Academy held in Venezuela and finished on February 12.

This Academy was held for the five FIG member federations of Zone 1 of Africa (North Africa). Participation was partially funded by the FIG through the Development Fund for that zone. As always, the content included theory lectures on biomechanics, anatomy, physiology, psychology and planning and technical lectures on Trampoline, Tumbling and Double Mini-trampoline.

The Academy was attended by 20 coaches from Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia. Libya attended an Academy for the first time and now becomes the 108th FIG member federation to participate in the Academy programme.

Planning Balance Beam Workouts During Competitive Season

Cori Cunningham. Cori is the Team Coordinator at Atlantic Gymnastics Training Center in Portsmouth, NH. She is a former competitor and Grad assistant at The University of New Hampshire.

During my own competitive gymnastics career I used to dread going to beam every day knowing that we would be expected to do huge numbers of stuck routines. I would also dread meet day because even though I had numbers of stuck routines tucked under my belt I was still not confident in my ability to hit a routine under pressure. As a coach I vowed to make an effort to get my gymnasts to look forward to coming to beam. My other goal is for them to present as confident and competent beam workers on meet day.

The four themes that I use to structure my competitive season workouts are as follows:

1 – PRACTICE WHAT YOU WANT TO GET GOOD AT
2 – PRACTICE UNDER PRESSURE
3 – FIND THE WEAKNESSES AND TARGET THEM
4 – ALWAYS PUT THEM TO A TEST SO THEY CAN MEASURE THEIR OWN SUCCESS
