George Nissen the Inventor of the Modern Trampoline
George Nissen, who is recognized as the inventor of the modern trampoline, died on April 8, 2010 at 96 years old from complications from pneumonia. He was born on February 1, 1914, in Blairstown, Iowa. He helped trampoline become a worldwide interest through his exhibitions and travels dreaming one day it would become an Olympic sport. While watching trapeze artists at a circus rebound on a safety net Nissen was inspired. He was a member of his high school’s tumbling team and also learned how to dive at the local YMCA. George thought that adapting the safety net concept could be really helpful to his training.
